India is the 2nd most populous country in the world today, accounting for 16% of the global population. The mortality rate is growing at an average of 2.28% every year with a maternal mortality rate of 113 per 1 lakh live births. Malnutrition, infectious diseases, unregulated fertility along with female feticide, infanticide, lack of awareness, and the inadequate availability and use of Maternal Child Health (MCH) services contribute to the mortality rate.

The International Association for Suicide Prevention (IASP) continues to urge for action over World Mental Health Day and to highlight where more work can be done.

To prioritise mental health care in our response and recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic;

Menteri Kesehatan Budi Gunadi Sadikin menyebut ada tiga tugas yang diemban oleh Kementrian Kesehatan dalam penanganan pandemi Covid-19 ini. Ketiga tugas yang diemban yakni penyuksesan vaksinasi Covid-19, mengatasi pandemi Covid-19 dan transformasi bidang kesehatan. Hal itu disampaikan oleh Budi Gunadi saat menghadiri forum JKKI XI tahun 2021.

Masalah kesehatan jiwa telah menjadi masalah kesehatan yang belum terselesaikan di tengah-tengah masyarakat, baik di tingkat global maupun nasional. Terlebih di masa pandemi COVID-19, permasalahan kesehatan jiwa akan semakin berat untuk diselesaikan.
